Description

Greek New Year’s Bread, also known as Vasilopita, is a sweet bread traditionally baked to celebrate the New Year. It often contains a hidden coin, symbolizing good luck for the year ahead.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 coin wrapped in foil

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and dissolve the yeast in it.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth, then let it rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it in a greased pan.
  7. Insert the wrapped coin into the dough.
  8. Let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool before serving.
