Description

Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and rice.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup black-eyed peas
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Soak the black-eyed peas overnight.
  2. In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and garlic, cooking until soft.
  4. Add ham hock, soaked peas, water, salt, and peppers.
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
  6. Add rice, cover, and cook for another 20 minutes until rice is tender.
  7. Remove ham hock, shred meat, and stir back into the pot.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh or frozen peas if available.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste.
